WHAT”S TO LOVE ABOUT THIS RECIPE?

  • There’s no need to turn on the oven. That is a huge bonus during the summer months.
  • The biscuits only need 8 minutes to air fry. I love how quickly air fryers cook things.
  • These are drop biscuits so there’s no need to roll out the dough and cut it with a biscuit cutter.

If you find biscuit-making to be intimidating, drop biscuits are the way to go.

RECIPE TIPS FOR AIR FRYER BUTTERMILK DROP BISCUITS:

  • Different brands of air fryers cook at different rates. Use the cooking time as an estimate.
  • Be sure to measure the flour correctly. Do not pack it down as you measure it.
  • Be sure the butter and buttermilk are really cold.
  • The amount of buttermilk needed can vary based on the humidity in the air. Just add enough for all the flour to get moistened.
  • Use parchment paper in the air fryer so that the biscuits do not stick. I use these parchment paper liners made specifically for the air fryer.
  • You will most  likely have to cook the biscuits in 2 batches.
  • Add 1/3 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder for additional flavor.
  • For more flavor, brush the biscuits with melted butter when you take them out of the air fryer and/or drizzle them with honey.
  • Taste best when fresh from the air fryer but will keep at room temperature in an airtight container for a few days. Reheat them in the air fryer before serving.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
  • 1 1/4 to 1 1/3 cups cold buttermilk
  • cooking spray
  • melted butter, optional

Instructions

  1. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

Note: I like to stick the bowl with the flour mixture in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before adding the butter.

  2. Add the butter and cut it in with a pastry blender or your fingers until there are no pieces larger than a pea.

  3. Stir in the buttermilk adding just enough to moisten all the flour. Do not overmix.

  4. Stick the bowl in the fridge while you preheat the air fryer.

Preheat air fryer to 400 degrees.

  5. Place a piece of parchment paper in the air fryer basket, spray it with cooking spray and use a greased 1/4 cup measuring cup to scoop dough and drop it on the parchment paper. You should be able to cook about 5 biscuits at a time.

Lightly spray tops of biscuits with oil.

  6. Air fry at 400 degrees for 8 to 9 minutes.

Optional: Brush tops with melted butter.

Note: Place the bowl of dough in the refrigerator while the first batch of biscuits air fry.

  7. Repeat with second batch of biscuits.
