This Firecracker Tofu consists of crispy pieces of tofu coated in a sweet and spicy sauce. Serve over rice or with steamed vegetables for a delicious vegetarian meal.
A combination of Frank’s Hot Sauce and crushed red pepper flakes makes a super spicy sauce for coating the tofu. A half a cup of brown sugar helps balance the spice with some sweetness.
How To Make Firecracker Tofu:
- Press the tofu for at least 30 minutes. I do this by wrapping the tofu in several layers of paper towels and placing a heavy cast iron pan on top. A tofu press is great to use if you have one. This step is to get rid of excess water so that the tofu crisps up more easily.
- Meanwhile, stir together the sauce ingredients in a bowl and set aside.
- Once the tofu has been pressed, cut it into cubes and toss with cornstarch.
- Heat some vegetable oil in a large cast iron or nonstick skillet. Add the tofu. Don’t crowd the pan. Cook in 2 batches if necessary. Cook until golden brown on all sides.
- Remove the tofu from the skillet.
- Drain off the oil in the skillet and add the sauce. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Return the tofu to the skillet and coat in the sauce.
- Remove from heat and sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions. Serve.
Recipe Tips:
Will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days but it is best eaten right away while it is still crispy.
Steamed broccoli or snow peas go great with this recipe.
