Baked Fried Okra is a healthier way to enjoy southern fried okra but it still has a delicious crispy coating. Super easy to make too with hardly any clean-up!
Fried Okra is one of my favorite fried foods, but it’s not exactly healthy. Turns out you can enjoy perfectly crispy fried okra without even frying it. As an added benefit, making Baked Fried Okra is much less messy than frying it. No grease to clean up afterwards.
I always use fresh okra when I make fried okra, but you could use frozen okra to make this recipe. Just let it partially thaw before putting it in the buttermilk mixture.
The sliced okra gets coated in a buttermilk/egg mixture. I like to add a little Tabasco sauce, but it is optional. It’s not really enough to make it spicy, just add a little extra flavor.
Next combine some flour, cornmeal, paprika, salt and pepper in a large ziptop bag or paper bag. Add the okra a little at a time, shaking to coat it well. Spread the coated okra out on a baking sheet. Spray it well with cooking spray and then bake for 25 to 30 minutes stirring halfway through and adding another spray of oil if necessary.
