  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups shrimp stock or low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning or Creole seasoning
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
  • 1 pound medium to large fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • salt and pepper
  • sliced green onions


  1. Heat oil and butter in a Dutch oven over medium heat.

  2. Add onion, celery, and red bell pepper and cook until very soft, about 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 

  3. Add garlic and cook 1 minute.

  4. Sprinkle flour over the veggies and stir and cook 1 minute. 

  5. Whisk in shrimp stock or chicken broth and tomato paste.

  6. Add hot sauce, Cajun seasoning and bay leaves. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes.

  7. Add shrimp and cook 2 to 3 minutes, until they turn pink. 

  8. Season to taste with salt and pepper and remove bay leaves. Serve with rice.
